When it comes to making cajun seasoning at home, it’s as easy as combining spices that I’m sure are already in your cupboard. They come together to make a vibrant, spice-forward blend that transforms grilled proteins, veggies, soups, stews, and more.

What is Cajun Seasoning?

From what I’ve learned over the years, cajun seasoning can vary greatly depending on who’s making it. When it comes down to it, it’s a blend of spices that are commonly used in Louisiana. This spice blend is primarily composed of paprika and cayenne pepper.

It is very similar to creole seasoning, but is more pepper-forward (black pepper, white pepper, cayenne pepper), whereas creole seasoning is more herb-forward. That means cajun seasoning generally has more of a kick than creole.

That being said, you can adjust the spice level of cajun seasoning by increasing or decreasing the amount of cayenne pepper you add.

Ingredient Spotlight

Cajun seasoning is such a versatile spice mix that you can easily adjust the ingredients to your flavor preferences, and still get that unique pepper-forward flavor that adds kick to your recipes.

For the most flavorful spice blend, be sure your spices are fresh!

  • Dried Peppers: I use a blend of freshly ground black pepper (grinding it yourself results in the most flavor!), cayenne pepper, and an option to use white pepper for a little funk. Paprika is another dried spice made from ground red peppers and its spice level can vary, but is generally mild. Substitute half with smoked paprika if you prefer a smoky flavor.
  • Aromatics: garlic powder and onion powder are of course added for a balance of flavor and savoriness.
  • Dried Herbs: I like to use a little thyme and oregano in my spice blend. Substitute with Italian seasoning if needed.

A note on salt: I do add kosher salt to my blend to be sure that it’s properly seasoned when I add it to my recipe. However, if you prefer a no-salt version, just leave it out, but remember to season your food with salt. If you’re using fine salt, please halve the amount.

Mix it Up!

It’s seriously so easy to DIY spice blends! Add all of the ingredients to a bowl, then mix together until fully combined. For an even easier shortcut, add them to a jar, put the lid on, and shake until combined. Voila, ready to use, ready to store, and no extra dishes (another win!).

Ways to Use Cajun Seasoning

Oh, let’s count the ways! This is a versatile spice blend that can be used in so many recipes and doesn’t have to be limited to the usual soups, stews, and grilled meats. But of course, you can add it to gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans and rice.

I also love using it in these applications:

  • …with shrimp! Was this obvious? Make a quick dinner with air fryer frozen shrimp and toss with cajun seasoning for the *best* flavor combination. You could also use it with shrimp skewers or in shrimp pasta.
  • As a matter of fact, it’s great with a variety ofseafood– fish and more!
  • Veggies! All the veggies, but especially air fryer okra to amp up the southern vibe.
  • Toss it on crispy potatoes, french fries, over hashbrowns at breakfast, or add to seasoned rice.
  • Mix it in ranch dressing or add it to garlic aioli for a spicy, creamy dip variation.

So many ways to enjoy this homemade cajun seasoning recipe, you’ll always need to keep a jar on hand!

Storage

homemadecajun seasoning blend as you would any other spices or spice mixes, in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. A cupboard away from the heat of your oven is a great choice!

How long will it last? Spice blends will last for several months, usually up to 6 months, if stored properly. Keep in mind that dried herbs and spices will lose their intensity over time, so it’s best to use it sooner rather than later.
