This Paleo and Whole30 homemade fajita seasoning is quick and easy to make, and a much healthier alternative to store bought packages. It’s also keto, and gluten free. There’s no sugar in it, no additives, and it’s a great all purpose spice blend to keep on hand for fast chicken or steak fajitas, shrimp, soups, dry rubs, vegetables and more.

Where Fajitas Originated

Culinary history is an interesting subject, and, even though fajita seasoning and chicken or steak fajitas is a really common and popular spice blend, weeknight meal, or menu item, fajita isn’t truly a spice, it’s a type of beef cut. It originated in Texas, and comes from the Spanish word “faja” meaning “skirt”. This is from when cattle ranchers in the Rio Grande area would give what they thought was undesirable meat, skirt steaks, to the Mexican cattle herders, who would then use the steaks for their cooking. Fajitas started gaining momentum through the 60’s-80’s in commercial use and in restaurants, and is something many people and families enjoy today, but now is something you can know just a small fraction of the background of too!

How to Make Whole30 Homemade Fajita Seasoning

This homemade spice blend only requires 7 simple spices that are likely already in your pantry. It’s incredibly quick to assemble. You’ll need chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder and cayenne. You can add them into an old empty spice jar, or use a small glass storage jar. My favorite are glassWeck jarsor glass hinged jars. Or these glass spice storage jars are great, too.

Once you have all of the spices, you’ll just mix or shake to combine them all into your homemade fajita spice blend. That’s really it! You’ll want to store in an air-tight container but it will last just as long as the individual spices do. It’s perfect to keep in the cupboard for whipping up really simple weeknight meals or meal prepping vegetables.

This spice blend is really great on all types of proteins, from chicken, steak, shrimp, pork butts and even ribs. Sprinkle a few teaspoons over vegetables and sauté or roast them, or use this blend in your slow cooker or instant pot taco soup. If you want a spice blend with more heat, add additional cayenne powder.
