Who accepts EBT in New Jersey? ›

What can I buy with SNAP or P-EBT benefits? Eligible items are household foods such as fruits and vegetables; meat, poultry and fish; dairy products; breads and cereals; snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages; and seeds and plants that produce food for the household to eat.

While you generally cannot purchase food from McDonald's using your EBT card, there are some exemptions. According to QuerySprout, if you get the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits or qualify for the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP), you could use your SNAP benefits to make a purchase at McDonald's.

SNAP cannot be used to buy:

Hot and prepared food or meals.

Even in the states that participate in the restaurant meals program, you'll only find a few SNAP-approved fast-food restaurants that take EBT cards. For example, McDonald's doesn't take EBT cards in Rhode Island, Illinois, Michigan, and Maryland.

If you qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, you can use your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card at participating Subway restaurants.

Illinois has elected to participate in the SNAP Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) starting late Spring of 2022. RMP allows specific qualifying SNAP households to utilize their SNAP Benefits to purchase hot meals at participating restaurants.

Tea, too, is limited to packaged and unbrewed because the USDA doesn't allow SNAP funds to be used to buy any hot beverages.

"Junk Food" & Luxury Items

Nonfood items such as pet foods, soaps, paper products, medicines and vitamins, household supplies, grooming items, and cosmetics, also are ineligible for purchase with SNAP benefits. Soft drinks, candy, cookies, snack crackers, and ice cream are food items and are therefore eligible items.

You can't use SNAP to buy alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, hot food or any food sold to eat in the store. You also can't use SNAP to buy items that are not food, such as soap, paper products, medicines, vitamins, supplies for the home, grooming items, cosmetics and pet food.

Households CANNOT use SNAP benefits to buy:

pet foods; soaps, paper products; and. household supplies.

Walmart accepts EBT card purchases at all locations that sell food and grocery items. Your EBT card can be used the same way you would use your debit card, and EBT cardholders in 48 states can also pay for Walmart delivery and pickup orders online.

For example, the USDA website says you can't use SNAP benefits to buy foods that are hot at the point of sale. This means you can't buy hot beverages or hot food at participating Starbucks locations.
