Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor: The Fight That Felt Like a Vacation (2025)

The Ultimate Revenge: Khabib's Sweet Victory Over Conor McGregor

In a sport where emotions run high, Khabib Nurmagomedov's triumph over Conor McGregor stands out as a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. For Khabib, it was more than just a win; it was a vacation from the constraints of the real world.

The fight at UFC 229 was a spectacle, with Khabib (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) dominating McGregor en route to a submission victory. But the post-fight brawl added an extra layer of controversy and excitement. Despite the anger and tension, Khabib recalls this moment as one of the most enjoyable in his career.

"Imagine a world where you can express your dislike for someone by stepping into a cage and physically dominating them, and then you're rewarded with money. Outside the cage, such an action would land you in jail. That's exactly what I experienced with McGregor," Khabib explained during a media event in Chicago. "I had been waiting for this moment, and it was my chance to not only fight but also to talk back to him. I savored every second of it, just like a well-deserved vacation in the Maldives."

Despite his success and dominance, Khabib chose to retire after two more title defenses, honoring a promise to his mother. He refused to break his word, even though his father, a key figure in his corner, had passed away.

"It wasn't just about my mother; it was the entire situation. I saw rumors about why I retired, but the truth is, my father's passing and my promise to my mother played a significant role. If he were still alive, I believe he would have pushed me to fight a bit longer, as I was only 32 when I retired. But I had an honest conversation with my mom, and it was a tough decision. Everything happened so quickly.

The interim title fight with Justin Gaethje, my father's passing, and the UFC's offer of a one-month break—it was all a blur. On one hand, the world was eagerly awaiting my next fight, but on the other, I had to honor my commitment to my family. I chose what my mother wished, and that was the end of my career."

So, what do you think? Was Khabib's decision to retire a wise one, or should he have continued his dominant reign? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
