A Mobile Farm Stand Project Beginning to End

A terrific benefit of running a farm is the farm-to-market aspect of it. Offering the benefits of our homegrown and handmade products to the public is one of the best parts of this farming life I love so much.

One of the best ways to get those products to the public is through a farm stand. While we are planning an on-farm stand in the future, we honestly needed something right away. So, we built a mobile farm stand this season and it has absolutely been one of the best decisions we’ve made recently.

Farm stands have a long and proud history, one that is part of the fundamental way of life that people have known for centuries. The benefits are many, such as:

  • Farmers do what they know, putting hard work into the land and gaining that treasured benefit from it.
  • Farmers love the land and they live a life as good stewards of it, making sure that they maintain the health of the ecosystem because it is how they survive.
  • Farmers, unlike large industrial farming corporations, put the emphasis on the life that they are cultivating instead of the dollars and cents surrounding it.

When we made the decision to build our mobile farm stand, I started designing. It needed to be easy to hook up to the truck and take where we needed it. It needed to be easy to set up and easy to display products. I also wanted it to match the Two Oaks Farmstead look and feel.

A Solid Foundation

We began with an old trailer that we found at an estate sale. It needed some work but it was a perfect place to start.

The first step was to remove all of the junk wood from the old trailer frame and repair any potential problems or issues. Being a family project, Logan removed the old wood, and Kris and Mason grabbed the welder to handle some frame issues.

Kris painted the frame my favorite red and put in a new floor of synthetic decking boards. After that, it was ready for the next step.

When I designed the mobile farm stand, I designed it with two long doors on each side that would fold down for display purposes. We did have to test and try a couple different kinds of hinges to find the best match. We also used chains to hold them and their products up while in service.

We used tin to roof the mobile farm stand and we used wood planks for the siding. The entry door is on the back side of the trailer, next to a fold-down table top that comes in pretty handy for handling business at the Farmer’s Market. We topped it all off with two signs, framed out at the front of the cart.

The Two Oaks Farmstead Mobile Farm Stand has turned out to be incredibly useful. The fold-down doors are strong enough to be completely filled with my canned goods, baked goods, and handcrafted items without any problems. The other great thing about it is the fact that it is a one-of-a-kind item in our area, therefore it gets quite a few looks and has caused quite a bit of talk. —Great marketing!
