I am a bigger lover of homemade spice blends and sauces, not just because I can have homemade in the pantry (without having a nervous breakdown) But I love them because I know what is in them, I control the salt and I can tweak them to my own tastes.

How often have you bought a seasoning blend and you want more flavor but you don't want to add any extra salt? With homemade blends, this isn't an issue as you can easily make this new Orleans Creole Seasoning blend with far less salt than commercial brands, or with no at all!

Is Creole seasoning the same as Cajun seasoning

Creole and Cajun seasoning blends contain many of the same herbs so they can be good substitutes for each other, but Creole and Cajun seasoning blends are different.

What is the difference between Creole and Cajun Seasonings

Creole Seasoning (like this New Orleans seasoning) is heavily based around herbs whilst Cajun seasoning is based around peppers.

So is Creole Seasoning Spicy?

Creole Seasoning is packed with herbs and spices that give flavor but it isn't hot and spicy.
But due to the number of peppers in Cajun Seasoning, it is generally spicier than creole seasonings. This makes this New Orleans style Creole Seasoning perfect for introducing flavors to the kids without the spice level.

(Side note - Anyone else's child stick their tongue into their drink and then try and blow if they eat something spicy??? NO? Just my youngest?? Hmmm!)

So what is Creole seasoning made of?

Creole seasoning is made up of:

  • sweet paprika
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • dried oregano
  • dried basil
  • dried thyme
  • black pepper
  • cayenne pepper (optional)
  • celery salt
  • salt (optional)

What can you use Creole Seasoning for?

Coming from New Orleans this seasoning blend is perfect for all things southern! Add it to your gumbo, your dirty rice, your beans, your muffaletta, or your jambalaya. I love to add it to mayonnaise for a quick dipping sauce for steamed shrimp, and it is the perfect spice blend for my Hot Louisiana Shrimp Dip. Alternatively, sprinkle it generously over some chicken strips before frying or mix it with oil and use it as a spice rub for fish.

Why is it that so many Creole spice blends do not contain fennel and cumin? I have found these 2 absolutely essential for a really good gumbo.

I always find that cumin takes it away from the creole and towards the cajun, so I don't add it.
I have never seen fennel in store bought versions but I think it is a great idea, will try that in my next batch!

Try Gumbeau's Traditional Dry Rub...it's got both fennel and cumin and a lot more! Mardi Gras is done...but the good times can keep rolling with Gumbeau's
